Massage Certificate Intensive

On the 2nd – 9th of September, Equestricare took over Brookleigh Equestrian Estate to run the practical component of their Certificate in Equine Sports Massage.

Students (who also have to complete 9 theory modules, 20 case studies, two essays and a practical exam) came from as close as Chittering and as far and wide as Kojonup, Wagin, Kalbarri,  Nerang QLD, and Ballarat Victoria! “One of the benefits of Brookleigh, is that students from over east can stay on site at the bunkouse” says course director Jessica Blackwell.

Whilst at the course the students learn about the locations, insertion and origin of the muscles, different types of massage, stretching, palpation, conformation and evaluation, as well as exposure to different tools such as red light and electrotherapy, and a bit on setting up a business and work safe practices.  “We have students from a wide range of backgrounds” states Jess. From Vets, to racehorse trainers, to competitive riders, to those who just want to expand their own knowledge.  At the end of their assessment  (providing they pass) they will be awarded an IICT (International Institute of Complimentary Therapies) approved Certificate in “Equine Sports Massage Therapy” which will allow them to practice as a professional in the industry, although not all will choose to go down this path.

Whilst at the course the students got the opportunity to work on a variety of horses, ranging in size from a 9month old miniature horse to an 18hh giant, from the retired paddock ornament to the racehorse colt in training.   Three of the students even got to visit the track very early on Friday morning with one of the horses!!

“Thank you to everyone who leant us horses for the workshop” says Jess, “the students really appreciate it and it’s important that they get exposure to horses from all aspects of the industry, as you never know what you will be faced with when you are out on your own”.
